Democracy is not a singular form of government. The problems in the US are largely the result of the two-party system, which is a consequence first-past-the post voting. Other voting rules, such as proportional representation, do not result in only two parties. It's more "US-style democracy is fucking terrible" than "democracy is fucking terrible."
The US didn't invent first past the post or political parties, but I agree that our current democratic electrical system isn't what I want, but it is better than some other forms of democracy like limiting voting to landowners, term limits that only serve to empower lobbyists, etc.

Long term, I think a good education system and a fairer voting system would help stop this. Short term I think it's too late for any systemic reforms to stop it. Anything that takes away some people's rights to vote, though, will just be a tool for fascism to suppress those that stand against it — fascism needs people it can blame who can't fight back. For example, the US is militarizing its police and trying to get way more convictions — I believe felons lose their right to vote in many states.
It's often suggested that the Founding Fathers limited voting to land owners as a way of maintaining power, but I think there's a very real argument that they wanted EDUCATED individuals steering the country, knowing that the average person was a complete fucking moron and easy to take advantage of.
