Note that this is an underwater POWER cable, not an undersea data/telecommunications cable that would run between continents and would be mostly just a very small fiber optic bundle.
The end point connections of cables like these also require data communications. So there's at least a handful of fiber cables in here to facilitate communications. It's just not its primary purpose. Much more efficient to lay one cable.
A) The white areas are required for the electromagnetic properties you have them in all signal cables. B) the small air gaps are due to round cables, essential for flex - even the large copper cores are not solid but many small cores for this reason. C) there is plenty of space in the sea! So ‘saving’ internal space to make the whole thing thinner doesn’t give much advantage.
There is no air gaps. Anything that isn't cable is probably vaseline or something similar. It¨s much easier to fill the space with liquid than to make a cable that can handle the crushing pressure.
You mean cross sectional area? A circle minimises surface area. The max cross sectional area would be one solid core. But that would not flex. Probably it would fracture.
No I mean outside surface, basically around the circumference. So that many small circles have a lot more surface than one big one. I think we learned that a conductor always has an electric field E=0 inside, so the charge only flows on the outside (theoretically)
I use rule of thumb that 1mm^2 can carry 10A. So assuming 5cm diameter, that's about 2000mm^2, so 20kA. That's max, so roughly 10kA is safer. Taking the elsewhere mentioned 150kV, that would be 1.5GW. Loads of assumprions and rough calculations. And not sure why 3 cables unless the 4th conductor is the shield, then it might theoretically be even more (although safetymargins would probably also be larger than what I used).
