Thing is, I'm not sure it is against EU law. As a web dev, tracking whether a user is using adblocker seems as simple as "did this element make it into their browser? No, okay try this one."

I think the main problem was a) that this was some piece of Java and b) they even used it even before any popups could request permissions for cookies etc.

And because of youtubes stance of using adblockers, I noticed that youtube has been cranking up the amount of ads one gets, as well as un-skippable show and movie length ads about content that is also extremally distracting every few minutes. ON. EVERY. VIDEO.

Controversial but I've been paying for Premium for a few months now and I think it's worth it for me. I spend 3 or 4 hours a day on YouTube. I started when a creator said that one Premium subscriber paid more than 10 people watching ads. For creators that I watch a lot I also support them on Patreon. I also find that being able to download for offline viewing, and having videos that are mainly podcasts run with the screen off are really good features.

OK fair enough, the popup ads were fucking annoying. But the ones that were embedded on the page were usually OK. And at least the popups could be easily closed, without having to look for a camouflaged X button or wait for one minute.

Any time you see an ad on a video with a political opinion, make sure you let everyone know that advertiser supports said opinion. If they didn't, YouTube wouldn't be working so hard to make sure you can't avoid them.

They were cracking down hard on me last week, got the first notification a month ago maybe, but I just X'd out of the pop ups saying they don't accept adblockers and that was that. Then last week it said this is the first video you can only watch three before you're locked out and it was like markers on the pop up etc. when I watched another one. I was using Chrome though so I switched browser and so far no pop ups. Hope it stays this way.

I once had a 30/40 minute "ad" that was really like a condensed biography of a Chinese dancing group, touring the world, before like a three minute music video. It was skippable sure, but it was in the middle of a music playlist. Absolutely ridiculous.

What gets me is that they mention that ads allow billions of people to enjoy youtube for free etc., and yet they're like a 30 billion dollar company whose ads are sometimes longer than the video itself. You don't need that. One at the start and one at the end sure, maybe, but I had four ads in four minutes of a 30 minute video once. Clicked off the video!

sure thing. Basically google "ublock origin" its a extension u can install on your browser. I use firefox, so if you are using something else it MAY NOT work. Also using another adblock with it might ruin it, because stupidly some adblockers allow certain ads. So, once you install Ublock, it should work. But youtube will sometimes update a script to fuck with the adblock. Its very easy to fix after youve done it once....

This comment is ONLY necessary if youtube suddenly starts giving popups again telling you adblock isnt allowed: On the top right of your browser, you'll see a list of extensions. where the ublock extension is I click it and there is a little gears icon for settings. then i go to "filter lists" "purge all caches" and then "update now".

Audio, video, ads over the top of content, popups, viruses, etc. I didn't mind ads when it was a banner at the side, top or bottom. But it's like an invasive species. You have to keep them under control. Firefox + uBlock Origin work well.

its not even that , it is unsafe to browse internet without addblocker , you might not click scam add , but what about your parents? maybe they will once a while , what about your grandparents? they will definitely fall for scam. and there is also that some adds used to mine crypto when loaded , or straight infect you with malware , and this is just tip of iceberg about safety without addblocker.

I used to not use an ad blocker because I recognize that companies need to serve ads to stay operational, and if ads on a site became too annoying, I'd just stop using the site entirely. That's not feasible anymore, though. The ads are just too numerous, too intrusive, and too noisy *everywhere* now.

Most websites are like 99% ad to 1% content. Like they're literally one or two sentences between a full page ad - or worse, they have text ads interspersed in the content making it hard to tell what's what. I fuckin hate the Internet.

Though I haven't seen something so egregious in a while, at one point YT was actually putting in 'ads' (I use that term loosely and not sarcastically based on the misspelling in the meme) that could run up to a hour and a half long! They were skippable at least, but that is just WAY too fucking much. I honestly don't recall what they were about but when your 'ad' is longer than the average infomercial, that is a serious issue.

Longest I got was around 35 minutes... some home improvement store chain ad, structured like one of those shows where they remake someone's home, but with the focus on showing how cheap everything was at their stores. That, coupled with them making it impossible to scroll around in videos to find specific parts (because you'd get two new ads every time you moved the marker) is what made me finally download adblockers.

In case anyone needs this: If you used uBlock Origin to block the pop-up, but scroll bar locks down, try going fullscreen on the video and then back. That works for me. It doesn't help with the video pausing itself, but at least I can read the comments and scroll recommended videos.

I do not use uBlock Origin, but ABP, and have the same issue. Confirming that Fullscreening and undoing it also removed the scroll bar lock.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am fine with ads, I recognize YouTube needs to be paid for, and it's an OK model to obtain the needed revenue. I'll watch your sales pitch if you'll pay for the video I actually want to watch. But only up to a point. If I'm looking at a relaxation video, don't play an ad that starts at twice the volume of the video itself. Don't hijack my 15 second video meme with a 3 minute political diatribe that I can only skip after 30 seconds.

Youtube adds the ads before and after videos, during the videos is your content creator adding them, but I don't think they get a choice of whether it's a 5 sec ad, or 2 hours ad you can skip after 5 mins

There was recently a change in that and to my understanding they made it so you're incapable of having less ads than youtube "suggests" you to include, this might have been changed but a content creator I'm subscribed to made a video about it and showed how they've gutted the ad controls and another creator said even when they changed these for a longer video, after saving the changes and going back they would just revert to the suggested amount and locations.

This right here. The reality is that WE are youtube’s product and those paying for ads are the consumers, just like any free online service. That’s simply how it is, and it makes sense from a business standpoint. But just like any company, production (viewership) needs to be streamlined. Youtube ads have gotten lazy, and now interfere with the production line (people watching videos). If google wants to rectify issues with production, fix the fucking production line. That said, ads still suck…

I never had issues with YouTube ADs until the day they launched a new AD for some shitty clothing brand that would continuously get louder in its 5 second runtime - so loud in fact that I'd have to take off my headset or turn down the volume every time I heard it coming. Which was so annoying to me that I didn't just get an ADblocker, but as well YouTube Vanced so I'd never have to listen to this shit again. I'm now at Revanced and have several ADblockers on PC, never again!

I honestly concur. I've said myself: If an ad is a reasonable length and volume, I don't mind watching it, provided it plays either at the beginning or end of my video. I sat through commercial breaks as a kid, but commercial breaks were a minute and half at most.

Even TV aimed at children has a maximum of 30% ads. You'll notice that any hour long show is actually only 42 minutes of content for an hour, or 21/22 minutes if it's 30 minutes. Any more, and people stop watching. If Youtube had ads that were a maximum of 30% of the video, it'd be more acceptable, but they've gotten too egregious lately. I'm only surprised that the NARB hasnt come down on Google hard yet. NARB is the ad industry self-regulators, which they did to avoid government regulations.

That's pretty much what I would say. If they imposed some limits of length of ads in relation to length of video, curated the types of ads that are shown (I don't think political ads should be legal, period), and either kept the ads to reasonable points on the video or didn't show them at all on important vids, I'd be willing to turn off my blocker. Not a single second before...though I should also add they need to police ads for malware too.

If enough people get upset over something a company does, laws and regulations will get passed against it, if it doesn't get whipped into a culture war thing. It's hard to do that for defending advertisements, and the NARB knows that any ad regulation that hits Youtube will absolutely hit TV as well, and they don't want that. I'm surprised they haven't taken google aside yet and told them to knock that off, or else their party of doing what they want with no oversight comes to an end.
