I thought Glass Onion did a decent job of portraying him until the nazi shit came out. My guess is that when he fired his PR team and now his social media posting was pure musk, people finally saw the true version of him. And when he lost the liberals he found an even better group, the MAGAs. Because while for a time liberals adored him, they did still have members of their ranks that would fact check him or doubt his claims. But after catching flack from a tiny, toxic, hostile subset of the trans community -- every community has loud assholes -- she chose to triple-down and radicalize herself. It seems the norm for most, if not all, major investors that buy owning stakes of a company. admittedly tesla became a more known brand after he took ownership. In hindsight, his at the time nerdy approach to raising funds, space x hat, not a flamethrower are red flags. A cheap way to get fans and investors to give more money to keep his business afloat.

Realistically, being a stupid asshole as a teenager is pretty forgivable as long as you do in fact grow out of it. Not sure that it absolutely has to be that way, but given how fucked up society's priorities are combined with age appropriate immaturity, I think it's basically inevitable.
