Its a shame sport fencing has become so bastardized from historical sword fighting

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seems like there's a lot of interest/curiosity about Fencing here. Anyone want a real world meet up at my club in MA?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wooooooooooow why whe don't do that more time ? I mean why they didn't used lights on the swords before ???

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look at that flick of da wrist

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The riposte is strong with this one!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to do fencing, and one of my classmates would thrust past people, then whip the foil back hard enough that the tip got their back.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While you were busy fencing, I was studying the bla...ohh wait.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

What are those dots down the blade?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those are for motion tracking so they could create the visual effect. Normal Fencing equipment doesn't have that.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I did saber and epee for about 6 years. Never saw any of that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who else's back would he strike the opponent from behind?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of Achilles' style in Troy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd watch more Olympics if they did this treatment to it.

In real time, hell yeah

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

In real time, we'd all be demanding that somebody post a slower version, because we couldn't make it out.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

That's what super slo-mo instant replay is for. Film it all in ultra hi-def and let people watch online.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ok I'm a national b rated fencer and this isn't too rare.....

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

his opponent after this

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

catchy title on the link. "more enjoy fencing"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe that position is called "Scorpion". It looks really cool and is used in stage combat.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can someone shop this so it's exploding with downvotes?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Foiled again. (How can I be the first person to make this comment?)

A lot of Anime yet into that technique.

Are those Elder Swords?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Close. Modified agonizers.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think they meant because they reassemble the elder wand.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Fencer"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I did fencing for several years. It's a lot of fun and a great workout. If it wasn't for blowing out my knee in college I would still going.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oof that sounds terrible, what happened?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

His fencing company required too much legwork

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was climbing things that shouldn't be climbed and fell hard onto a dumpster. Lol.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wish I had stuck with fencing. But my instructor was always hitting on my mom

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"Touche." is probably what he wanted to do.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was she into it or was he being a little rapier?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

She was clearly uncomfortable but kept it to herself bc I had really wanted to learn and his class was the only one we could afford

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just noticed that pun and now I hate myself

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

foil is a THRUST weapon not a SLASH/THRUST like sabre. the hit area is only torso therefore there was no reason to guard so hard

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

high* not hard

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Except, y'know, over the shoulder hits exist.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A simple quarte or sixte guard would have been more than enough to parry and counter. Then again thsi is olympic they dont care about form

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was from a video specifically designed to advertise fencing not the Olympics, it is exaggerated but even then no fencer is perfect

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is still olympic style fencing which greatly differs from classical which emphasises control and form Olympic all that matters is a hit

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While that's awesome, they are wide open

9 years ago | Likes 349 Dislikes 14

He also blocks the guys hit in the same time

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sport fencing doesn't care as much about being open to attack, it's about getting the point first. HEMA on the other hand is a mans sport.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like Russian roulette every day, with a bullet called life.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's been done, it works, it doesn't, it's situational, like every move.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But like someone already said the move is now illegal.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Turks often did something like this and it worked quite often they had the sheathe in the other hand to block with though... So.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He's blocking the attack though

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Right?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Until the other guy/gal uses his dying act to also run him through. Fencing is a sport not self defense.

It's only blocked according to the rules. There's sufficient time after being stabbed to reposition & attack.

Duh

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair, it both narrows their hit marker and is unexpected. This move is reserved when opponent has concentration on a big lunge.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Or generally in close quarters. Options are either, around the back, pull arm back and jab again, or simply back up. Over the head works too

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anywhere out of the peripheral vision, and especially those masks. I'd like to see fencing with PVC or something with a smaller mask.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The masks actually don't obstruct vision as much as you'd think, and the flexible blades require more skill as you have less control at tip.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But I see your point

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From what I understand, this ad/these effects were made to interest people in fencing, and doing fancy stuff like spinning does look cool :P

9 years ago | Likes 154 Dislikes 1

actual it's a fairly common move in foil and epee to run past the opponent and flick behind your back to try to get a touch as you pass.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It worked

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Why it worked? 1. It's staged, 2. The guy on the right just held his fencing epee up uselessly, and was going really slowly too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having fenced for 3 years I can say it's actually a legit move. Getting in close crowds the opponent and a quick flick around the back 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

2/2 is a nice finisher for those experienced enough to pull it off (myself excluded). Otherwise you'd have to pull your arm back to "remise"

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Having fenced for 11 years and taken part in several EM/VM qualifiers, you are not allowed to pull your secondary hand in front of torso

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is however legal if you dont lead with the shoulder and dont drag the hand in front of the torso. Then it's just hard.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The hell is the guy on the right doing? Looks like he's going in to slap the ass.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No this is a real move not used that often though. You can only hit with the tip so when you get in close you have to get creative to hit

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

but how do you claim their skull with a maneuver like that?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just the tip?

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Depending on the weapon

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Foil + épée = only tip. Saber = entire blade but mostly just edge. Foil aims for chest, épée whole body, saver above waste.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

So... just the tip, then. Niiiice.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Which is silly, considering real rapiers have an edge across the entire blade.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is Foil, which is, yes, only sharpened at the tip. While there is competitive Rapier fencing, Foil is most common.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I believe fencing started out with Foils or Epees. Rapiers were a later development where they added a blade. In any case, they're different

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fair enough.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fencing is so far from actual swordplay

9 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 31

I've seen my friend bruises from fencing, broken ribs too. Brutal as fuck.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, And I suppose you also think Call of Duty isn't very much like being in the actual military?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Like virtually every hand to hand martial art. Even famous ones are not really useful in a fight compared to the few pragmatic styles.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I stopped because it was too limited. It's the same reason I don't like boxing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...why would anyone expect it to be?

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

While they were wasting time studying fencing, did you master the blade?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Bring back the wax bullet pistol duels!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've seen my friend bruises from fencing, broken ribs too. Brutal as fuck.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most dangerous sport is gymnastics. But I doubt anyone would say it's useful in a fight.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In a match up id bet on the dude with the metal rod.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bet a few former gymnasts have quite a few metal rods... attached to bones.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

However very close to rapier swordplay. Witch uses the same principles

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Except for the fact that rapiers are *nothing like* the car aerials modern fencers use. Rapiers are large swords.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And sabre fencing is fairly similar to one handed sword fighting. That shit is intense!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There's certainly some overlap, but many fencing techniques would not work in an actual smallsword duel, and vice-versa.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well no shit, your life isnt on the line. It originates with pre-gun dueling. Hence why they still use Epee's, essentially rapiers

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

Rapiers were functional swords though. Those aren't just blunt foils, but far more flexible less dangerous than real late era rapiers.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, but fencing has ultimately been boiled down to electric tag and likewise is very watered down compared to true HEMA.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 21

Kinda silly to talk about "true HEMA". Olympic fencing isn't trying and failing to be HEMA. It's a sport.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

How intensely did you stroke your neckbeard as you posted that?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I just wish I had more lube for faster stroking action.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because all you need to do in a swordfight is touch the opp and let the blade do the rest. Theres also Foil and Sabre fencing

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's not the light touch that makes olympic fencing unlike sword fighting, it's the scoring system/tolerance for double hits.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Epee exists if you want "realism." Sabre and foil are just much faster thanks to the rules, imo they're more fun to fence.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"true HEMA"? Sigh. The only thing like an actual swordfight is an actual swordfight. Everything else has rules and structures for safety.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

True, but there are differences of degree. Sport fencing has rules that remove it from sword fighting that aren't necessary for safety (1)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as sport fencing isn't trying to simulate anything. A HEMA bout obviously isn't truly equivalent to a fight with sharps, but a larger (2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The meaning of the word Fencing comes from "defending, act of protecting". There is no parrying going on in the Olympics. Just two people 1

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

jousting each other. You have to at least consider that this 'double kill' aspct looks detached from actual swordfight, where 2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You've obviously don't know what you're talking about, even in foil parrying is still incredibly important

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fencer here, that move actually is now illegal since you cant lead with your shoulder.

9 years ago | Likes 150 Dislikes 3

Was about to post that my self. I ref so if people do this I am not happy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you so much for being a Ref!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice to be thanked!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's sincere, you folks are saints. Our kids and parents are pretty good, but when we host, I've seen some nightmares.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was being sincere as well normally I get people arguing with me over points. Fencing is great but we are competitive bunch

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait what? When did they change that?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was actually this last year for foil.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn, I used that a couple times in college. Worked once...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's awesome when it works, but good luck getting it to work. Might be why giving your opponent your back is discouraged by every tradition.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why I mostly stick with epee to many rules in foil to much of the match is in the hands of the judge.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And post the same comment multiple times so everyone sees this ever so important information.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

posted twice because I saw it was applicable twice and I thought since this is an older post it would increase the chance that someone 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

might see it. Because I'd like to get a current foilest's take on this because I thought it would be interesting. No intention to offend 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Epee is in the hands of the judge too; they have to make fewer decisions, but those decisions are more important.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, for super-humans, there's always the Chamley-Watson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvQKvF33ELk

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shame about the whole shoulder swapping business, at least it does heavily discourage infighting.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Infighting's the only thing that makes foil fun to watch though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

There are other ways to infight. Took me a while and a ton of stretching

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Note: "heavily discourage" ;) we all have our tricks

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Please teach me the rules. It looks neat, but I know nothing of it

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well there is a lot I might make a post about it soon as my first post

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hey, it could be worse. They took sabre out back and shot it. Now I'm left fencing this sad excuse of what sabre once was.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah... you just about nailed it, some people in my club who do sabre and disappointment is just about the right descriptive atmosphere.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to fence in the 90s and it wasn't allowed then (you couldn't turn your back)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And unless they've stopped using spools the guy would have caughts his foil on the wire

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He is still sideways, I would give the point.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why should we believe a guy about this who just builds fences?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol posted a source XD

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fencing has too many rules! Just fight to the death for heaven's sake!

9 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 2

This is why I mostly stick with epee to many rules in foil to much of the match is in the hands of the judge.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Welcome to HEMA

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No one wants this more than literally ever sabre fencer. No fancy pansy bs the other two have - just two peoples with swords going at it.

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Ha, gayyyyyyyyy

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

I regret my wording.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Hey is it worth taking up as a sport? I love swords and think being able to use one would be cool

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

YES, and as far as Fencing vs. other sword sports, Fencing was developed as a teaching game, so it's a great foundation for any combat sport

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kendo might be more your cup of tea

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you're worried about strict rules, Kendo is the last place you want to go. Don't get me wrong, the discipline is what I love about it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not too worried about strict rules, what's the difference between kendo and fencing?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Major difference: Kendo is a sport version of Japanese sword arts while fencing is the sport version of European small sword arts...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's quite fun, but be aware that there are a LOT of rules, to the point where it's frequently described as a mental chess match.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Whereas traditional chess is mostly physical sport. Like billiards and darts, too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

combat chess is quite physical, as is chess boxing. :p

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was a saber captain for four years, it's a blast but it's not like any other form of sword fighting. A bout usually lasts a few seconds.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you can remember the trope where people constantly try to think what the other is thinking, do that in about 2 seconds and you're fencing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seems cool, is it hard to learn?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The concept is simple, performance is much harder. The movements are simple and effective, but few options and little time to think.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
