I don't understand why people think Large Language models are AI that is going to rule the world... OHHH because they don't understand complexity and just take headlines at face value. It's more nuanced than that. No one worth listening to has made the claim that LLMs are going to rule the world, but experts in the field have raised some serious concerns, and I'm inclined to believe them. I mean, ffs, GPT-4 posed as a blind man to hire a guy over the internet to solve captchas for it. Geoffrey Hinton, the "grandfather of AI," has said there is no meaningful difference between how LLMs "think" and how we think. This is not just fearmongering born out of ignorance anymore.

Considering any advanced, unregulated tech will be used to harm, subjugate, oppress, etc, I think we know better on the why, but I always appreciated Asimov's ideas that it *could* be regulated. But he did have to note it was, cuz then there's no story.

The dangers of AI isn't that robots become conscious and decide to kill people all by themselves. It's that the humans who get to have the final say about the algoritms that build the consciousness of these robots are the same wealthy assholes that are ruining the world today. When the robot uprising comes they will murder the poor, not the rich, because that is how the rich have decided that the code will be written.

The real danger isn't even AI killing people. It's rich assholes using AI to do something 75% as well as humans, thus eliminating a job while making the product worse for the people who use it (but not so much worse than it outweighs not having to pay someone to do it).

"AI" isn't a threat right now because "AI" is still science fiction. What we have now are huge sets of stolen data masquerading (and being sold) as something greater than what it is. You are right, that it will be the rich assholes with the last say, but that's because - like most everything else - they're the ones who own the technology. The danger isn't an uprising, it's "cost savings". We'll be out of work, and don't kid yourself thinking there's any safety net to catch us on the way down.

“AI” is definitely a reality and not science fiction but perhaps the type of “AI” you’re thinking of comes from science fiction? For example, some code based on mammogram data is better at predicting breast cancer risk than the traditional methods used by doctors. While this “AI” isn’t anything like ex machina style robot, it’s definitely “artificial” and also “intelligent” (not to be confused with sentient)

No. Despite its feats, it's still a computer, no different than 50 years ago. You put a punch card in (your mammogram data), and you get an anticipated result (cancer risk) out. Being better than a human isn't enough for intelligence.

Let's not, because if you're going to go out into the world and continue to try and pass off these large dataset systems as "intelligent", you're helping to aggrandize exploitative technologies and increasing the status of the people holding their reins. You will be relaying propaganda, all so a few greedy fucks can sell their stolen data to other greedy fucks who want to use the technology to put downward pressure on human labour. It's not AI. It's not intelligent.
