I'm more interested in his voters and his local Democratic Party. Why does he keep running, are there no other options? Why isn't the Party developing new candidates? Why aren't volunteers asking for new leadership? Why are none of the local Dem Party members trying to push him out?
In the end, he is a reflection of his voters.

What the fuck is the point at that age? I don’t get the appeal. If I was a politician I’d serve until I was 70, tops. And then, only if I had some major goal I thought I could accomplish like passing universal health care.

It’s a bad idea though, because it would require a great deal of effort to amend the constitution in order to remove a few outliers while doing nothing to address the core problem.
Cognitive tests would be similarly bad because the second a bad actor is in charge again, it becomes weaponized.
Term limits are ludicrously bad too, which is why the Heritage Foundation wants them so badly

We already have term limits---it's called The Vote.
The citizens should have the final say about who represents them and if they think a candidate is too old (among other possible reasons) they simply vote them out. But if they think an officeholder is doing well for them, they keep them. The trick is to have smart voters---do we think that is not possible?

The fault is with the idiots voting him in time after time, not with the laws. They have a chance to kick him out every 4 years, but choose not to. So they need to live with the consequences of their actions (or lack thereof, those not voting are just as culpable).

Every 6 years for a Senator. Representatives are 2 year terms, Senators are 6 year terms, and Presidents and VPs are 4 year terms.

PS. This is why the House is such a clusterfuck at times. With 2 year terms, Representatives are almost always campaigning rather than actually getting down to work in Congress.

I'm fine with old people in Congress. Bernie, right? They need representation too. What I'm not fine with is 1. people who are not mentally or physically fit for the job 2. a system that supports incumbents, 3. a captured political system that does not serve the voters. What I want is a system where after 65, you automatically lose party affiliation and your duties turn to mentoring younger politicians and teaching regular Americans how to effectively engage with their own government.

It would be better if he stepped aside and let the newer blood in. He could still represent ideas on news shows or whatever, but time for an AOC or Mamdani or … whoever else would pop up … to be given the reigns of what he represents. Plus he helped get Trump elected in 2016.

100% agree. This is why I have an issue with a system that supports incumbents. This is a job that absolutely needs experienced, seasoned people - like AOC. The other controversial thing I want: mandatory voting. Make it easy, make it mandatory. The people who really decided the last election are the ones who stayed home. That has to stop. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Old coots should be welcome, but the instant you can't do your job, young or old, or are corrupt - you are done.

Age limits, like term limits, is a distraction issue. Neither will make your political party give you someone worth voting for. If your political party can't come up with someone worth voting for, you need to fix the party or move to one that can.

Yeah. The administration is a joke, but Iowa has been sending this guy to represent them in Congress since 1975!!! The people who have been in office since the 80s or even the 90s (maybe even the early 2000s) ARE THE PROBLEM and always HAVE been. If they weren't the problem, they'd've fixed shit by now. Party aside. These people have CAUSED, or failed to halt our political decline.

I personally failed. I detested the idea of going into politics because is was a slimy place in all aspects I could see. What I failed to realize it that it was a slimy place BECAUSE of the people who DID decide it was a place they could thrive. I, and other like-minded people who detested the slime SHOULD have entered and pushed the slime out as best we could. Not enough of us did. And I take personal guilt on that count.

Basically half of everybody who voted in 2024 voted for Trump, regardless of age. 18-29 year olds: 47%. 30-44: 47% Do you not see all the young MAGA Republicans in congress?

No, not at all, actually. The old farts running the country have ideas that were set decades ago, and don't reflect the modern world at all. They are unwilling to change as it takes them out of their comfort zones. Like the Orange Returd wants to bring back steam powered launchers for aircraft carriers, how stupid is that? We need a progressive rump that can balance the fixed thinkers out. Small steps of change that we can all adapt to easily. Too much change is not good but no change is worse!
