You're very welcome, Manatees. I re-parsed last phrase of your desc several times until it resolved: apt, visual, and quite eloquent. I sort of grew up in a '68, including learning to drive, and owned a '62 camper; both had almost all interior removed. What really fascinated me was how ergonomic the driving experience was, esp the position above the front wheel set and the "bus driver" style steering. This new model is just a "cutesy ass" toy for Retro Richie Rich, not a truck on a mission.

I saw one for the first time a month or so ago, thought the same thing. almost like they cut the front off a PT Cruiser and called it a VW Bus, and IMO the PT Cruise is one of the ugliest cars to ever make it to market.

That disappointed me too. We needed a new car this past year, something with some storage space and 3rd row seating. I really liked the idea of the ID Buzz. But we have family far away that we visit a couple times a year. I have no interest in making a 12-hour road trip even longer with charging time for an electric vehicle. Right now we can make a gas stop / bathroom break for everyone plus a quick dog walk in 15 min and be back on the road.

How is that BS? How long does it take to charge? If it’s longer than filling up my gas tank then yes it would literally add time to a road trip. I talked to someone once who has an electric vehicle and they say they plan their charging stops around food breaks at restaurants. But, 1 - we don’t stop at restaurants on a road trip, we eat on the move. And 2 - both my wife and youngest daughter have celiac disease, so we can’t just go to whatever restaurant is near the charging station.

Which at least doubles our stopping time on a road trip. I have to fill up with gas at least twice on the way to see my family. With an EV that’s a full hour of down time for charging.

For everyday use yeah, I’m sure it’s great. My issue is the impracticality on long hauls. 12 hours to visit my family on the east coast. 6.5 hours to visit our friends in Chicago. Almost 8 hours to visit my wife’s family in Wisconsin. Not to mention the road trips we take for the kids’ spring break each year. Until you can fully charge an EV in the 5 min it takes to fill up a gas tank, they are literally not as practical for long road trips.

We just drove from KC to Daytona beach. Almost took the EV but needed the cargo room of the SUV.
According to the app, charging stops only would have added 2-3 more hours to the 18 he trip. Which we kind of already did with bathroom stops/food/ etc

Yeah, that’s way too much time for me. 2-3 hours of down time on an all-day trip is crazy. I’m serious, we don’t stop for food, we don’t make separate bathroom breaks. We make 2 stops (maybe a 3rd to fuel up so we’re not rolling in on fumes). In 10-15 min the car is gassed up and everyone’s used the bathroom, including the dog. Then it’s back on the road. We’ve been doing this trip for 22 years, we have it down to a science.

The infotainment systems have always given me some issues. I have a 2025 Jetta SE and I can't use the voice controls with Android auto, the cars built in shitty voice control takes default and you can't change it.

Interesting. How long does it take to charge? Once they hit the 5 minutes or less mark I'm ditching gas for good. Range become irrelevant at that point.

Takes me longer to take a piss or get a drink at the shop etc. My body needed more breaks than the charging we planned. Especially with family, the car's downtime is not the limiting factor.

20-80% in like 20-30 minutes, with charging it charges while you go for a piss or get snacks, you can't run for a piss while filling with petrol. unless it's a road trip or you can't charge at home you rarely ever have to visit a public charger.

For most distances. I do a lot of weekend camping and anything 7 to 10 hours away is more or less straight shot driving except for fuel. For a daily driver around town I could see it, but I'm holding out for a fast charging electric camper van. I would love to pop into a camp site and have an electric charging awning or something. Work remote from a national park. Ideally actual self driving one day so I could work while the car drives me somewhere cool, then explore the new place.

I don't think it really matters at this point if they're lying to themselves slightly, this type of trip just isn't the strength of electric cars even though they definitely are possible. Those 2 extra hours might well push the trip time such that camp setup is in the dark instead of at sunset, lots of things happen at the margin like that. Let's get a carbon tax going instead to push all the transit, cabs, delivery vehicles, etc electric instead of aggressively bashing on range-anxious people.

I've done more than 1400km in a single day and I only live in the UK, which isn't the largest country. I had to make one stop for diesel + coffee and one more for just coffee.
