I have spinal compression, wrecked knees and shoulders, massive hearing loss with a dose of Tinnitus, and apparently none of it's service related, thank goodness. I really thought my vehicle hitting that landmine might have done some damage, guess I just got lucky.

Some people serve and some give their all to 10 men. Who's to say they don't all deserve medals?

oof

is that all at once?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Does... does it matter?

PSA: PTSD is treatable. If the Veterans' Administration gives you the runaround on mental-health help, the Give-An-Hour program will connect you to a therapist for free: https://giveanhour.org/

I have screws in both knees... a jacked up neck and shoulder.. and every unknown sound makes me want to grab a gun. But hey, the screws in my knee helped keep my recent injury at only a fracture instead of a break. If I didn't already have screws... I would have needed them.

I have bad knees and tinnitus, but thanks for the college money.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

And the back. That's crappy also.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My knees hurt and I can't feel feelings anymore.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah... but that certainly does help us stay ice cold during any sort of event that other people consider an 'emergency.'

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

to be fair, a lot of military guys rush and pressure marriage with girls who are not ready or specifically targeting them to get bonus money while deployed. So they share the blame in thier own victimization. it doesn't help that thier peers implicitly encourage them to do it by bragging about the benefits and other stuff.

I served 6 years in the Marines and my unit was deployed.

And they also foolishly share thier entire bank accounts.
This happens mostly to younger members.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

young girls, typically don't want to get married young, and most guys and girls don't know how well they can survive long periods of no intimacy, so it's just a recipe for disaster that can also create a lot of resentment for each other and the other sex in general.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

additionally, a lot of guys cheat on thier gf and wife while deployed if given any chance

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

So you're saying, in general, don't marry young lol

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It definitely helps not to. Divorce stats show that. People need to figure themselves out first, give themselves a chance to try out life on their own. After you do that, you have a much better shot at finding a good partner.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah I know. I was just kidding a little bit because that's a pretty common sentiment. But your example sheds more might on the specific obstacles young military couples face

I got relatively free socialized healthcare for a bunch of cancers and autoimmune problems from burn pits.

The VA? yipes

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Depends state-to-state and facility-to-facility - just like private practices. My experience in Ohio has been great. My friend’s in Louisiana has been garbage.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've been to the Phoenix VA, the one I see in the news the most, and honestly it's not that bad. I have a certikas and my treatments cost something like 25K but I don't pay for it. I rarely have scheduling problems and have never been dissatisfied with the service. I realize my experience doesn't necessarily reflect reality in general but I couldn't afford my meds without the VA.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Agreed, but I've found that the VA works differently depending on what state you're in. For example— my wife is a retired Marine. She used to live in WA, and the VA in that state was just in complete shambles, causing her no end of strife. She then moved to OR, and SUDDENLY the VA worked as advertised and actually worked to actively help her. Yes, she sometimes still has issues with Community Care since they are not centralized in OR, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was in WA. So it varies.

The 2 in Tucson are fantastic

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I live in Kansas and I dont know if its the lack of people or what, but my VA experiences have always been pretty easy.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's a thing you should just have access to as a human right lol. I'm glad you got help, but joining the military shouldn't have been necessary for that.

2 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 2

Agreed, I often point out my experience and my free social health care from the American government as an argument in favor of it being a universal right

2 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

But if they did that they couldn't hold it over poor people's heads as an enlistment tactic.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is always weird how many people in the armed forces don't understand that it is a socialist program with all of the benefits of socialism. It is really insane that all citizens don't immediately become enrolled in a similar program to our military at the age of adulthood.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I'm 35 and wish I could still join so my family could have decent benefits

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't it be fantastic if you had all of the benefits of our military just as a citizen? The ubi, the medical, the housing, the food, etc. We have something called currency sovereignty and the only thing we'd have to do to afford it would be for congress to make it so. We could instantly increase the standard of living across the entire US, but we won't because rich people love the value of the dollar too much and won't give up any of their own wealth to combat inflation.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’m the same way, and with my VA coverage it’s continued. I don’t know how anyone can look at the current state of things and say it’s tenable. My wife has had arthritis her whole life, and if it wasn’t for the good fortune that her parents had great health insurance and now she does she wouldn’t be able to walk. The medication that keeps her a productive member of society and keeps her quality of life up would bankrupt us, and we pull in just about $150k/year as a household. It’s criminal.

I worked with a girl whose husband cleared their bank account of $30k and left her while we deployed to the Persian Gulf. There was a very real fear that she was going to kill herself.

The amount of times I hear about spouses cheating on their enlisted better half... It's just disgusting. Don't fucking get married if y'all gonna be whores (men and women, ofc).

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I would always tell anyone I knew in the military, don’t marry the first person you meet

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is the root problem honestly. I was dumb enough to do it, marry someone in the military because the military said it was required because he was being stationed somewhere else. Oy vey.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My response to most authority is to assume they are incompetent and I show up way too early to everything.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can't imagine the PTSD of drone warfare. They're either dropping small changes without you hearing or seeing anything, or coming right at you motors screaming.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

It's also a problem for the drone pilots. Not only do they suffer the same guilt and issues as conventional bomber pilots, but they don't even have the chance to refuse to bomb civilian targets. Libyan pilots dropped their bombs on empty fields and bailed out rather than drop them on civilians - but a drone operator is stuck in the same room as an officer with a loaded gun saying, "DO IT."

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Still, I've seen at least one video of a Ukrainian drone operator guiding a surrendering Russian soldier to safety. It's incredibly rare though.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yes. It depends on the organization. Ukranian drone operators are not U.S. operators. Remember that Chelsea Manning was locked up and tortured by Obama for whistleblowing about how as many as 90% of the casualties from our drone strikes were civilians.

Knew a 'Nam vet once through a roommate. We were at his apartment one day chillin' 'cause he had good weed (relatively; as good as an illegal-weed state gets) 'cause...Coping mechanism. 'Bout twenty minutes on, I reach for the fuckin' thing and dude pulls a big-ass knife from the sofa cushions and starts losin' his shit. ...I moved too fast, while high, so pretty slow. But too-fast enough. And now there are drones n' all this? Fuckin' hell...Could not convince me to sign up for any of this shit.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

But, he got the mustang or charger right? Right?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If you join the military to be a firefighter do you get a Charger or a lifted truck?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hate you. How’d you know I got a charger

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep, and the $750 a month payment on their 22% APR loan for it, too!

Something that I've heard a couple of times is that people who serviced get LIED to about not having some sort of promised compensation by their upper ranks? I'm sorry it sounds so vague, there's a specific word for the compensation that I forgot, I heard PirateSoftware mention it a few times.

I'm always curious why the answer is never, I killed some people who didn't need to be killed for reasons that were later proven to be bullshit. I mean, killing people impacts you.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

being fair, the majority of us never fight. i just fix computers for military air fedex, for example

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Several reasons i think. Murdering people up close, is very different then killing demonized enemy's from afar. 2ndly, learning a while after the fact that a action you first believed to be right was wrong, is way less impactfull. 3rd: You know "collateral dmg" is unavoidable in times of war and have made your peace with that. Lastly: Being able to kill is a quality frowned upon today, but was very much a ( evolutionairy) nessescity for those b4 us, and thus might not impact others as it may you
