So I found my brother's old N64 at my parents house and stole it. He said it didn't work. The power cord had been spliced but he used duck tape. I tried splicing it again, it didn't work, so I found a new one.
That's all it needed! I love all the Zelda games. After playing all day Saturday, Sunday morning I found out my game hadn't saved. A little googling and found an instructable to replace the battery in the game cartridge. Uh oh.
It was my first time using a soldering iron, but HFSB!!!! It worked!!! Now my game is saving and I don't have to stay up all weekend trying to beat it in one shot. Spent about 20$ for supplies from Amazon, now I need to find more games.
Siiig
"...and I don't have to stay up all weekend trying to beat it in one shot." Oh friend, is your next hobby speedrunning OOT?
AnxiousCuttlefish
Good choice too, that game started my lifelong love of the franchise. I just leveled up the OoT amiibo gear in the newest game just for the nostalgia.
FraudulentPepsi
I bought this game on eBay last week, and it comes tomorrow
jhuckaby
It's "duct" tape, not duck, but seriously contrats, N64 is an awesome system!

There's a battery in the game cartridge?

Was wondering same
EnigmaNL
Do yourself a favor and try to find a decent CRT TV if you plan on playing a lot of N64 (or other retro consoles). It just looks so much better on CRT because that's what it was designed for.
evilkittie
and at times games were designed to take advantages of imperfections in crt tech that were fixed with lcd tech this makes thing not look correct

No love here for F-Zero?
Sh1tMovieGroup
SNES classic, F-Zero X not so much for me..

Majora's Mask!
6Rstar
I just finished OoT! I was trying to get all 100 gold skulltullas but I missed 6 somewhere. I hadn't played it since I was a teenager (now 41). It took a lot longer this time with adulting and all. About to start Metroid prime on GameCube.
SquiggleSquaggleSqwoo
The N64 Resident Evil 2 is perfection.

Shadows of the empire. Well done star wars game hands down!

Banjo-Kazooie for the win!!

I bought a used new 2DS XL a month ago and am now playing through ocarina of time 3d and a dozen Pokémon games
BenWyattCalzoneKingandIceTownClown
OoT was good, but Majoras Mask is great
sdhull221
Also look into DKOldies.com. good prices there if you don't have a local guy. I have been trolling them for a 64 also. They also sell a vga to hdmi for the n64 which makes a huge diffrence prices are fair.
CanadianMomEh
My husband still has his. He now plays it with our son who loves it.
raggeragnar
I’m envious ! You have so many great games ahead of you to play for the first time.
allhailthedarklordofthetwinmoonssampsons
I want to revisit ogre battle 64. College roommate had it and I played a ton of it. Never had an n64 of my own and that game is stupid pricey now.
Nykidemus
Did you ever play the one on the snes? I loved it, but never got into the n64 one.
SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem
They're both good imo! But I have more memories with the SNES Ogre Battle. That game was such a unique entry on that console. So was 64 though tbh. Poor system was severely lacking any sort of RPG, let alone tactical. And of course... both damn games are expensive. I not too long ago finally got the manual and map to complete my SNES copy and OW my wallet. -_- Even on Ebay almost none existed.
IdRatherBeOnThePlaystation
I played on this to death back in the day and I was this many years old when I found out the cartridges had batteries. Neat
LlamaLlamaQuack
Can you share a link to how you fixed? My Ocarina of Time also no longer allows me to save, and even though I can finish in one run, I’d like some breaks now and then lol
SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem
I learned to solder from Voultar, a big name in the retro community. I'm no pro like he (literally) is, just a mediocre hobbyist, but his videos have been immensely helpful in helping me solder for old games and consoles. The process is basically the same regardless of SNES, 64, or NES battery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC79VHZR2ns
Darnelg
Had to do this with Pokemon Ruby that I got off of ebay. best purchase ever!
KiteFlyingPianist
A bit disappointed because I thought the new hobby was going to be fixing older, non-functional game consoles. As a lifelong gamer, myself, though? You do you!
tautaula
To be fair, elements of this are present.
QueenBaculum
I might work up to fixing consoles, but this was my first time working with electronics.

Exactly my guess as well lol.

I played through OoT last summer with my girls (now 5, 7, and 9. Then we did windwaker, and now working our way through Majora's mask. Such good games.
DreadPirateJaceMangrove
I need to replay the zelda games more. Usually my motivation for going back to my old favourites is to show them to whiever I'm dating at the time. But I seem to exclusively date nerd girls, and they've always already played through the zelda classics in my experience. The 3D mainline ones anyway.
RoombaTheAssaultVacuum
Toon Link is my digga. He has so many expressions and half of them look like he's done with everyone's shit lmao. Also one of the youngest Link's (age twelve) to ever be able to properly Wield the Master Sword. He was a rough and tumble kid who fought a literal demon lord to save the world.
Bleedingyamato
Best of all: he gets to stab Ganonorf in the forehead. 🤣
RoombaTheAssaultVacuum
Wind Waker has one of the most Savage Dorf kills in the entire franchise.
Bleedingyamato
I love Wind Waker. One of the first Zelda Games I finished. Best of all: I preordered (this was back was preordering actually had perks sometimes) and got that bonus disc that had Ocarina of Time and it’s Master Quest version. So I finally had the chance to play OoT since I never owned an N64. I hope your girls enjoyed OoT as much as I do. Any tips for MM? I have it on another GameCube bonus disc and on 3DS but haven’t played. The time limit/need to strategically rewind has concerned me.
HelpTheWretched
Don't play it on GameCube; it has buggy audio and crashes all the time. 3DS version gets some flak for changing a few things, but the only one that bugs me is that the song that slows down time, doesn't slow it as much as the original game. But they added more of the save point statues, which is good. As far as the time limit.... I've honestly never heard many complaints about it. It's worked into the storyline as kind of a "relive these people's final days until you're able to save them" trope.
HelpTheWretched
The people's lives all reset when you rewind, but most of your progress doesn't. All the items, masks, songs you've obtained stay with you, so you can get right on to the next quest. You may need to complete a dungeon again before you can tackle certain side-quests, but there are quick warps to the boss battles. All in all, expect weirdness, and sadness. The story's a real trip. The first few opening quests make it feel like a weird spinoff rather than a sequel, but then it gets back on track.
Slyps
Lowkey tho reason I enjoy having a kid, she's 3 so she's more scatterbrained right now, but when she's more mentally capable of focusing I'm gonna play so many games with her.
AltF4EwingsSarcoma
Kirby's epic yarn: easy controls, you can literally carry other character to advance. Can't die. Best game we have for our family of littles.
JoshuaFalken
I always try to challenge my kids to figure out the puzzles. I helped them a lot initially but then they started to pick up on things and are now telling me what to do. It's a great time with my girls 😊
geekykeycap
Oh shit man, ive been doing the same with my nearly 6yo boy. We started with link to the past and we're on skyward sword. I can't wait to get to breath of the wild. He's having a blast. Little guy dressed up as Link for Halloween and pretty much every person that saw him said we should enter a costume contest. He has longer blonde hair and blue eyes, and the right shaped face for it.
geekykeycap
Majora's Mask was so much creepier than I remembered. He hid behind me for a few parts lol. Twilight princess is also a lot more mature than I recalled. Kinda worried me when Gannon is literally stabbed in the fucking chest.
mdizzly
Also on skyward sword on Wii with my 2. Loving it so much 💕
geekykeycap
Right? It's better than I remember. It's also fun seeing what ideas were scrapped and carried forward over the years. The puzzles in skyward sword do seem easier.
JoshuaFalken
Yeah...unfortunately it's not in the budget for a good gaming system or gaming pc right now. I'm making do with emulators on an old pc and some cheapo usb n64 controllers I got on Amazon. I tried doing BotW on my pc, but it just couldn't handle it.

That's the hardest N64 game to get your hands on. I think it's over 100 bucks for the cart

Oh, man I forgot all about Shadows of the Empire. I loved that one. I need to see if I can find a copy. I recently started replaying my old N64 and some of those games held up remarkably well.

I remember you had to unlock the cheat menu by holding almost all the buttons and then rotating the stick with your chin or mouth 8 times perfectly.

Just realized Mario RPG and Uniracers are SNES, oops, there was a Pilotwings 64 though I think

Playing old games is great. Till you die and remember auto saving is a fairly modern convenience. That was 3hrs of gameplay I wasn't prepared to play through again.

Found my gold and silver in high school when the nostalgia hit me and my friends. The next day was when I learned about the batteries in the cart allowing for night-day to be kept up with and save.
UmAcshually
It's because old games evolved from the arcade era, where concepts like "limited lives" and "losing" were money-grabbing tactics. The equivalent of pay-to-win: If you make a game deadly & force restarts, people must put in more coins to play it. So arcade games were difficult not due to some noble "It's more rewarding when you beat it!" philosophy but to squeeze more money out. The design patterns established in those carried over to early console games. It's taken us decades to unlearn them.

NappaTheFriendlyGhost
I recently replayed the original bio shock and got gutted by the second big daddy… I completely forgot that I need to be quicksaving. Lesson learned.
vcgetdown
??? No you don't there are literal respawners everywhere...
Doonesman
You can turn them off, if you're going for a specific achievement. Which I assume this person had done.
vcgetdown
If he's doing something like that he should really know better I would think. The game does have auto saves between levels as well
NappaTheFriendlyGhost
My problem was actually ammo not the achievement as other guy said. When you respawn you keep current consumables and ammo. I had dumped everything into the boss and died right at the end leaving me with a wrench, no ammo or health, and no money.
NappaTheFriendlyGhost
I actually ended up not reloading and just used the thing that boosts wrench damage and circle strafing it till it died rather than restart the level
vcgetdown
That was one of the bigger complaints of the game back I the day, you could literally just pull out the wrench and die over and over while making progress and be fine
