Connery at 34 looks older than me and I'm about to be 40.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

NGL having kids has aged me terribly. In just a few years I feel like I have aged more than ten.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a youthful appearance too.
In the grocery store they always asks to see my ID to prove I’m over 18 so that I can buy cough syrup.
I’m in my 60’s

The difference is cigarettes, red meat, milk, and LOTS of Scotch. That shit will age you.

This stuff happens. I was just talking to my "glasses dept." lady whom I have gone to for several years and assumed was mid-late thirties, when she dropped "My 36 year old daughter" . I couldn't even ask..........

Smoking ages you horribly.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sangster also smokes. Which doesn't detract from the fact, yes, smoking ages you, but there's also other factors (likely genetic, on both fronts, alongside things like overall environmental exposure to different things).

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Connery was a wife-beating misogynist. That’ll age you.

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

I've been wondering how come people think that I'm still in my 20's. Last night I put together 2 pictures from last year and one pic from 10 years ago and ok, now I get it. I sent the compilation to a person I've known for like 6 months and he guessed that one of the pics from last year was from 10 years ago, and that just confirmed my findings.

I mean Brodie is a heavy example, but still I feel like this is a overall trend, that men today look youngee for way longer. Even if they're already bolding.

Question is why? Didn't they habe sunscreen back then or something?

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Back then they used suntan *oil*, to literally help cook their skin to brown. I have a friend who still uses it, it's crazy. Plus the smoking.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I should have mailed it to The Marx Brothers.....

Ralph Maccio still would look younger.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got hit so hard with the straight stick that I can’t see men as anything other than looking slightly better or a lot worse than me. Why am I like this? Can it be different?

Yup, he went bald in his early 20s. Spent most of his life with a toupee. He finally gave it up when he went completely gray.

Jennifer Connelly is someone that didn't age until she hit like 45-50 too. Still a babe.

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Steve McQueen was 27 y/o here in The Blob (and he was playing a 17 or 18 y/o high school student). Back in those days 27 was the new 50.....

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He is so fucking old in The Blob

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Labour Laws, it was Labour Laws that made things like that. You could have a 20-something play the teenager and work normal (long) hours, so they had older people play teens, simple as that.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My point is more at 27 y/o he looks 40s.

7 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yes, that's what smoking and drinking heavily and using sun tan lotion instead of sunscreen will do to you.
All that shit ages you decades before your time.

7 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 3

While that's true, Connery has just always looked old. Even in high school photos he looks considerable older than he was. The other guy has just always looked like a child. This is comparing two extremes at either end of the spectrum.

In the end you tell me porn movies only show the guys with rarely huge zucchinis and tricks of light and the camera

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You realise that's likely because his parents were hard smokers right?
High exposure to second hand smoke can be just as harmful to premature aging as direct smoking is.

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

While I don't know about his parents, Brodie-Sangster also smokes and drinks. He probably does still have better overall nutrition and sun protection and so on, but it's also just going to be partly genetics making him look so young in spite of things.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't underestimate just how damaging the sun is when it comes to aging.
You just need to look at lifelong truckers for that.
As their window side half of their bodies often ages way more quickly then their cabin side.
Because when they have their windows down, that half is getting way more direct sunlight. Here's a good example: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trucker-accumulates-skin-damage-on-left-side-of-his-face-after-28-years-on-the-road/

I have the baby face blurse too. Generally people think I'm at least 10 years younger than I am. Just the other day, I was having a conversation with some guy I just met and I mentioned I have an almost 16 year old kid. His flabbers were ghasted. He told me he thought I was mid 20s at most. I was like sir, not only do I have an almost 16 year old child, I have a 21 year old child as well. This is a fairly common type occurrence as well.

It was the same for me, until I started graying.

Oh, I'm graying, I just have strawberry blonde hair so it's hard to tell lol

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. I looked 22 and then mid 40s (my age) in like a year

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Neoteny increases over time and our perception of beauty changes accordingly. To a Homo erectus we'd all look like children. Case in point: The Great Gatsby, 1974 vs 2013. Ages: Mia Farrow 29, Carey Mulligan 28, Robert Redford 38, Leo DiCaprio 39.

7 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

There's also modern makeup and digital retouching. By 2013, the latter had already been standard in Hollywood for years. It was an open secret that every A-list star expected their face and body to enhanced and de-aged in post.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

smoking really didnt help

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I believe it is mostly due to the fact that, people "faced life" earlier in the past.

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Completely different nutrition is my guess. We have fresh veggies and fruit all year round, but they did not. They also didn't have 1/

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

protein shakes, acai berries, spirulina, and all that other shite.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That being said, look at their facial structure. This is not just a matter of prematurely aged skin. These people are going on thirty or are in their thirties, yet the couple on the left has infantile facial proportions. Of course not all actors look like this, but this is what we determine to be cute / attractive. Sexual selection does the rest. Look at areas where neoteny has progressed further, such as East Asia. A side effect of civilization & relative peace.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Life as in unplanned teenage pregnancy. Few things wreak havoc on the human body and shave years off your life expectancy like pregnancy and giving birth. That doesn't explain why men aged more rapidly though. But if you gew up back then, you know there was smoke *everywhere*. Every office building, restaurant, schoolyard. You couldn't walk the streets w/o passing smokers left and right who breathed cancer smog in your face. Most ppl had at least one family member who smoked at the dinner table.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well now they face microplastics and bowel cancer for the young….Gains and losses

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Traffic exhaust still contains lots of carcinogenic and toxic pollutants too, even without added lead. But life expectancy in the developed world is going up, so anti-smoking measures and unleaded gas did have a positive health impact overall.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL Neoteny. +1
Still, within just a few decades?

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

On the cinema screen at least. It's not as drastic among the general population, although the trend is there. Just like developed world denizens kept getting taller until relatively recently. The American height average used to increase by 3.8 cm / 1½ inches every 20 years for most of the 20th century. That's a pretty big change within just 2 decades.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm Canadian and our average height has been going down in the last couple of decades, but we've also had tons of immigration from "shorter" countries, so I think that metric is muddled now. I'd be really interested to see a comparison of the average heights of third-gen Canadians, in comparison to the heights of their various ancestral countries. That would be more informative than average Canadian height now vs past decades.

It would be better to compare people in similar lighting situations. Harsh lighting that shows every wrinkle vs. super diffuse here.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're right that the lighting on the left is a lot more favorable. But skin aside, there is a pretty big difference in facial structure. Infantile features on a big round face. Of course you could find this neotenic type back then too, just like you can spot people who look like Redford and Farrow today. It's our preference that appears to be changing, and with preference comes a change in prevalence.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You already posted that.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, and based on your comment I assumed you had missed it since I already went over skin vs facial structure. Neither skin ageing nor better lighting is responsible for the dainty-featured baby faces and big foreheads of the actors on the right.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of course this is not just due to neoteny but also the fact that everyone smoked back in the '70s (either first or second hand), gasoline was leaded, and people thought nothing of drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Among other environmetal factors.

7 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

PS: Increasing neoteny is also a sign of domestication (on top of being a result of human sexual selection for cuteness/harmlessness, which research suggests happens in peaceful times. Whereas in times of war & uncertainty, women select for more masculine-brutish men). See dogs vs wolves, or the russian silver fox experiment which led to cuter / more infantile facial features within a few generations of artificial selection for docility. This suggests that we increasingly domesticate ourselves

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Women also sexually cycle through hormones that predispose them to whether they want a strong muscly man or a kind thoughtful one.
Depending on where she is in her cycle.
Regardless of peacetime or strife.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Personally I've never had my "type" change from hormones. Not through the month, not during pregnancies, not when I went on BC, not even through puberty. So this may be a bit overblown. The main change for me is that as I've aged, the age of people I find attractive has also increased. Basically I'm most attracted to people around my own age, and that's always been the case.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Makes sense for deciding who gets to sire one's offspring. Long-term partner investment is about who gets to raise the rugrats, and that depends a lot on environmental circumstances. (War vs peacetime was a bit simplistic. Resource abundance vs scarcity also factors into it, as does overall population health and life expectancy, male mortality rate etc.)

I don't envy the twink, it's rather a curse to look like a spoiled, effeminate kid that long into adulthood.

....... We looking at the same picture?

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Not for an actor.
It means he can play a good range of characters most other actors age out from being able to pass off.
That's a huge asset.

"How do you do, fellow kindergarteners?"

7 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Ralph Machio enters the chat, and yet, for personal reasons, he still is only know for being himself and like 2 other characters..... (Daniel LaRusso and Johnny)

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Playing teenagers for a decade is range? Even MJ Fox didn't like that. As I observed throughout the years, actors usualy dislike the typecasting after a while, with a few examples like Matt LeBlanc.

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

True being type cast can suck.
But there's another thing actors like more, and that's still getting cast in roles.
So many of those teen actors drop off once they age out of playing those teen roles, because they don't preform well in other kinds of movies.

7 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I generally don't understand why kids/teens think that acting supposed to be their adult career, just because they played in movies or on TV while being young. So many lives were screwed up because noone told them: it's temporarily, you need a new direction after graduating, maybe uni degree.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

You know how 40 year olds rarely change career paths

Same deal. They've been doing it quite literally their entire lives and the possibility of becoming rich and famous will always be alluring.

Not saying that's right or good, but that's the reason.
